For developers

The Swim Score, as an API.

The same data behind every Swimmable page: tens of thousands of official bathing waters and beaches, live readings from public sources, and a transparent, rules-based score. Every value says where it came from, and missing data is null, never a guess.

Authentication

Send your key in the X-API-Key header. Keep keys on your server: never ship them in browser code or public repositories.

curl -H "X-API-Key: $SWIMMABLE_API_KEY" \
  https://api.swimmable.app/api/spots/la-jolla-cove/conditions

Main endpoints

GET /api/spots/nearby?lat=&lon=
Nearest spots with distanceKm. Optional radius (km) and limit (max 100).
GET /api/spots/{idOrSlug}
One spot: coordinates, water type, source dataset, licence and (for EU bathing waters) the latest quality classification.
GET /api/spots/{idOrSlug}/conditions
Current readings, the Swim Score (0-10 or null), score factors, and per-field data status with source and reason.
GET /api/spots/{idOrSlug}/forecast
Stored hourly forecast for the next 24 hours with a per-hour score and the best swim window. Status "unavailable" when not yet ingested.
GET /api/health

How the score behaves

  • Scale 0-10 with one decimal. Bands: Poor under 4, Fair 4-6.9, Good 7-8.4, Glass 8.5 and up.
  • Factors without data are left out and listed in scoreMeta.factorsMissing; confidence is the share of the model backed by real data.
  • Without a water temperature the score is capped at 6.9 and scoreMeta.partial is true.
  • Wind is in m/s, temperatures in °C, waves in metres. Water temperature says whether it was measured (station, buoy) or modelled.

Pricing

Plans and self-serve API keys are coming soon. We'll publish prices here when they exist; there are no paid plans today.

Data comes from public sources (NOAA, NDBC, Open-Meteo, the European Environment Agency and the U.S. EPA) under their own terms; see data sources.
